Sex - A Divine Treasure

In ancient India, it was believed that the body is as sacred as the spirit. It was at that time that scriptures describing the quality of life and the methods of seeking pleasure from the most intimate and natural of human activities - sex, were written.

Stemming from the belief that Nandi (the Bull), companion of Lord Shiva observed his Lord's amorous advances towards his consort - Parvati, and recorded them as 1,00,000 verses. These verses, were passed on from generation to generation, by word of mouth, till the time of Svetaketu, a Vedic sage who summarized them in the 8th century BC.

Sex - A Divine TreasureMuch later, the ancient sexologist, Babharavya and his disciples condensed Svetaketu's work into seven sections with the famed 64 positions. These were further elaborated upon by seven ancient sages.

Mallanaga Vatsyayana interviewed these sages and compiled a "Manual of Love". This compilation is dated by historians to be around 380-420 BC, a period well known for prosperity and hedonistic indulgence and probably during the reign of Chandragupta II.

The epic highlights games and pastimes of men and women, their celebrations, the study of arts and sciences to enhance one's personality and cultivate pleasant traits. The book details the various postures of love and erotica including games, tricks, aids and spells.

The basic message of this manual is that, it is the duty of a man and woman to experience love and passion, and it is meritorious "if it is done well and with the aim to please both participants, and for them to derive pleasure".
