Unprotected Sex
While close to a half (47%) globally have had unprotected sex without knowing their partners' sexual history, Indians are the lowest risk takers when it comes to making love, with only 21% of them having had unprotected sex.
The Norwegians (73%) and Greeks (70%) are most likely to have unsafe sex without knowing their partners' sexual history.
This along with many other interesting facts were revealed in the Durex Global Sex Survey which is the largest survey relating to sexual health, attitude and behaviour undertaken by Durex, the world's leading condom brand.
More than 3,17,000 people from 41 countries including India participated in this sex survey. This is the fourth year that this survey has been carried out online via the www.durex.com website.
'Play Safe' behaviour
Indians safe play on matters relating to sexual health was further reaffirmed in that, they have had the fewest sexual partners - just 3 compared to 9 globally. The Turks (14.5) have had more sexual partners than any other nationality in the world.
Indians are the oldest to lose their virginity at an average age of 19.8 years compared to 17.3 years which was the average age of first time sex for people worldwide. People from Iceland have sex younger than any other country (15.6) followed by the Germans (15.9) and Swedes (16.1).
With only 13% of the Indians having a one night stand compared to 44% globally, just goes to reinforce their 'play safe' attitude on sex. They are also among the lowest in the world when it comes to extra-marital affairs (15%) compared to 22% globally.

Concern about HIV / AIDS
Playing safe has its own returns. The survey revealed that only 4% of Indians have had a sexually transmitted infection (STI) which was the lowest in the world while globally 13% of the respondents admitted to having had a STI.
Indians like many other nationalities around the world believe that HIV/AIDS is the most important area that needed greater public awareness. While 87% Indians voted it as a top priority area which needed greater awareness in the society, 72% of people globally felt so.
Therefore, a majority of Indians (47%) felt that Government should be investing in Sex Education in schools while 34% around the world believed so.
Indians priority to sexual safety was re-emphasized when close to a half (49%) said that, with regard to encouraging the young people, priority should be to abstain from sex before marriage. Globally, only 8% of the people felt so.
Almost three quarters of adults worldwide (74%) believed that young people should be encouraged to practice safe sex while 41% of the Indian opined the same.

Views on Sex Education
While 15.6 years was the average age when Indians first received sex education they believe that formal sex education should start just before 14 years of age.
Globally 13.2 years was the average age of receiving sex education first which people felt should start just before the age of 12.
Safe sex without compromising on pleasure
Believing in safe sex did not deter the Indians in seeking sexual contentment. While 46% of Indians said they were happy with their sex lives compared to 44% globally, they also experienced least monotony in sex (3%) compared to 7% globally.
Pornography (37%) and Pleasure enhancing condoms (28%) are the top 2 sexual enhancers preferred by Indians. Globally, 23% voted in favour of pleasure enhancing condoms.
