How Effective are they in preventing HIV.
Enough studies have been done to test the effectiveness of latex condoms for prevention of HIV transmission. The studies show that latex condoms are highly effective at both protecting a person from transmitting as well as becoming infected with the virus. These studies were done on HIV-negative individuals at high-risk for the disease because there partners were HIV-positive. And the studies proved that condoms used consistently were effective 98-100% of the times!!
The only sure fire way of preventing HIV or other STDs is to either not have sex or to having sex with a long-term mutually monogamous partner, not infected with HIV or other STDs
For millions of people who have previously acquired a viral sexually transmitted infection, however, effective measures can be taken to protect future partners from infection. In the United States, there are 50 million people estimated to be infected with herpes simplex virus (HSV), 20 million people estimated to be infected with human papillomavirus (HPV), and 850,000-950,000 people estimated to be infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS. So what more with the developing countries, where health care is not widely available with further complications of affordability and access.
Many people engage in sexual behaviors that place them at risk for acquiring STDs. Sexually active people must have access to information and options to reduce their risk. The male latex condom effectively reduces the risk of STD transmission when used correctly and consistently.
