"Love" is a much-used word. And also perhaps, the most misunderstood. For love, men have waged war, traveled over land and sea, built the most magnificent monuments and even given up their lives! Many poets, writers and researchers have even tried to define what "Love" is. Millions of pages have been written about it, thousands of songs composed and almost every person ever born has fallen in love at least once.
In a recent study on love, researchers were able to identify nine specific types of romantic love - ranging from pure sexual attraction to a love that is so powerful it is as if the two people merge into one.
Here are the nine basic types of love... Which one is yours?
Cupid's Arrow: Popularly known as "Love at First Sight" or "Puppy-love", it is rooted in physical attraction. First Love could be a very intense feeling, but seldom lasts that way!
Hedonistic Love: Love for pleasure alone. This is sheer lust and it provides self-gratifying feelings of excitement. In other words, it is falling in love for the sake of pleasure.
Love as a Transformative Adventure: A "whirlwind romance" - this is an unpredictable love that brings much pleasure and excitement, but can easily go wrong. It could be falling in love just for the sake of "falling in love"!
From Cupid's Arrow to Friendship: Initial intense feelings give way over time to a relationship that is based on friendship.
From Cupid's Arrow to Role-Bound Relationship: The natural process of maturing - love begins as an uncontrollable passion and eventually the couple settle down.
Demythologized Love: A practical and down-to-earth view of love. The romantic myth of love is replaced by hard work and compromise.
Trust, Recognition and Support: The central theme of love. This is the love that has inspired great works of art, and is the one that would live on forever.
Partnership Love: Involves "the merging of two people" where both partners put their relationship before their own individual needs.
Love as the Ultimate Connection and Profound Feeling: An experience of love as the most profound of human feelings. As being the very essence of life itself!
