Chakras are the basis of the energies of life and body, or Kundalini Energy. They are believed to be located along the spine from the top of the head to the anal region. Each Chakra represents an aspect of a person's mind and body and stimulated, usually in sequence, they create the necessary energies to achieve balance of peace and harmony.
First Chakra
The first Chakra, or Muladhara, is the area between the anus and the genitals, also known as the perineum. It represents the basic elements of life, such as food, shelter and other human needs and is symbolised by the Earth and the color red.
Second Chakra
The second Chakra, or Svadhishthana, is the genital area, known in Tantra as the Yoni (vagina) and the Lingam (penis). It represents our sexual thoughts and urges and our need for procreation and family. It is symbolized by water and the color orange.
Third Chakra
The third Chakra, or Manapura, is the navel. It represents our power, fame, authority and longevity. It is symbolized by fire and the color yellow.
Fourth Chakra
The fourth Chakra, or Anahata, is the heart. It is the center of body energy, located on the chest between the nipples. It represents all that is associated with the heart, such as love, compassion, devotion, caring and friendship. It is symbolized by air and the color green.
Fifth Chakra
The fifth Chakra, or Vishuddha, is the throat area. It represents knowledge and truth. It is symbolized by space and the color violet.
Sixth Chakra
The sixth Chakra, or Ajna, is the forehead, also known in Tantra as the third eye. It represents enlightenment and self-realization. It is not symbolized by any specific element and its color is bluish white.
Seventh Chakra
The seventh Chakra, or Sahasrara, is the top of the head. It represents the area where immortality is achieved and energy is released. It is symbolized by the thousand-petaled lotus and golden white light.
Most Tantric sexual exercises begin with either the first or fourth Chakra and move through the other six Chakras in sequence, ending with the seventh Chakra, or the top of the head. For this reason, many Tantric activities suggest the participants imagine all of their energy being released through the top of the head to successfully end the sexual experience.
