If you have had unprotected sex, you forgot to take the pill, or a condom split or came off, you can take 'emergency contraception' up to 3 days after sex to help avoid an unwanted pregnancy.
It takes three days for an egg to implant itself in the womb. If you haven't been able to get emergency contraception during the three days, you can still get help.
Emergency contraception pills are available at almost all chemists. However, it is wise to consult your doctor or go to the nearest Family Health Centre.
There are two pills. You take one as soon as possible after you have had sex and the second 12 hours later. Occasionally, you may feel a bit sick or dizzy. If you have vomited within two hours of taking the pill, contact your doctor for another dose.
