Contraception and...

Why read this? Well, in recent years casual sex amongst teenagers is becoming increasingly common. And though you've heard about the condom, it is possible you don't know enough about protecting yourself from infections and unplanned pregnancies. So, here's your very own guide to contraception!

How to wear a condomMale condoms This is a thin latex rubber which when placed over an erect penis traps sperm at the point of ejaculation. Apart from protecting you from an unwanted pregnancy, a condom will also help protect you from sexually transmitted infections. Always use a Kohinoor condom. They are produced and tested under stringent quality control systems, and are freely available.

Pill The Pill is the safest method of contraception. It needs to be taken daily, regardless of whether you plan on having sex that day or not! Before going on the pill, it would be wise to consult your doctor and understand the possible side effects. The pill will not provide protection from sexually transmitted infections.

Injections Progestogen Injections give you 12 weeks of contraceptive cover and are a good alternative for the pill. Injections are available from your doctor or at the family planning clinic. You will have to remember to get your shots in time!

Other methods There are several other methods of contraception available. However not all are suitable for girls or young women. You will need to consult your doctor before using any of these. These do not offer protection against sexually transmitted infections. Other methods of contraception include:

IUD (Intrauterine device): A small plastic/copper device, placed inside a woman by a doctor to stop fertilization. It can stay in place for up to five years.

IUS (Intrauterine system): A small plastic device which contains the hormone progestogen. It is inserted by a doctor and can stay in place for up to three years.
